Collaboration is generally treated as meaning the cooperative way that two or more entities work together towards a shared goal. According to research (completed by Hogue, 1993; Borden & Perkins, 1998, 1999) there are five stages of collaboration. They are described as:
The highest level of working together is collaboration because group members view themselves as belonging to one system in which they and other group members are working toward the same purpose. They also view they are working toward mutual goals, and develop the view they are part of one system. Since members want to achieve the same goals and believe they are part of one system, they communicate and work in a manner that helps the goals and purpose be achieved. This develops mutual trust that allows the members to devote their time and energy to meeting goals. Time and experience working together is generally needed to reach this collaborative level.
