I recently had the opportunity to experience the pre-school selection process on behalf of my CASA child. Pre-School A was heavily invested in security measures: a front door key pad, fingerprint computer check-in, video cameras on each classroom and play area. When I asked about whether they participated in the Kansas Quality Rating System my tour guide said, “no, that is really hard, but we do use their guidelines as we make quality improvements.”  Pre-School A had some good features and the price was within the parent’s limited budget. But I left wondering why the investment in security versus pursuing quality ratings. Pre-School B was amazing, but may not be affordable for this family. Not only had Pre-School B achieved four stars in the Kansas Quality Rating System, but had also achieved NAEYC accreditation. Later as I compared the two schools, the little differences between the two environments were significant. I’m hoping my CASA child can attend Pre-School B; and I’m grateful to our partners who focus on the little things that make such a big difference to children all over Kansas!
